Voyager: Sounds and Images

My friend Rhett Guthrie of ByteCrafters sent me a link to the Voyager spacecraft site that includes information about the golden record that it carries aboard. This record contains a collection of sounds and images that are intended to teach whoever finds the spacecraft a little about our planet, our science, and our culture. The record also includes the following greeting from President Carter, which I find particularly inspiring:

"This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe."

Before you visit the site, think about what kind of information you would provide and then see how your own ideas compare against what was actually chosen.

Not directly related but thought you should know in case you didn't already - moon real estate is still pretty cheap: http://www.lunarregistry.com/?source=gmoon

Destiny

  • Destiny is my science fiction movie about the future of humanity. It's an epic, similar in breadth and scope to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
