DimDim's web site says "Dimdim’s mission is to become the leading provider of open source web meeting software." However, recent events make me think they have a bait and switch strategy.
DimDim recently released version 4.0 of their software but have kept the open source distribution at version 3.5. I contacted the company a week after the 4.0 release to ask them when the open source distribution would be updated and they told me that they could not give me any information about that. In addition, several postings to their forums have asked the same question and there have been no responses from the company.
This made me wonder if they have internally decided to let the open source version stagnate. If so, I think they should remove any claim that they are an open source company. If I hear anything that indicates they are going to keep their open source up-to-date, I will update this blog entry.
UPDATE: I'm updating this post as promised. One of their reprepresentatives, Steve Chazin, kindly posted a comment to this blog explaining the situation. Apparently they are delaying the release of their 4.0 source code for a few weeks in order to iron out any bugs they find from hosting the closed source version. So with any luck, the 4.0 source will be available soon. When this occurs, I will remove this post ;-)
