Eliasson’s New York Waterfalls

I'm a big fan of Olafur Eliasson's artwork, so I was happy to see that he's just installed 4 cool waterfalls in New York City. It's being billed as the city's biggest such project since "The Gates," the $20 million effort by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude that I visited in 2005.

Lanterns

I recently purchased a couple of fun solar-powered lanterns for my balcony. They charge up during the day and turn on automatically at night. Here's a picture of them glowing this evening:

April Fool's Coincidence

A funny coincidence happened today. One April Fool's joke was Virgle, a fictitious joint venture between Google and Virgin. Virgle is a manned mission to Mars, and the following video shows Richard Branson describe the mission while trying desperately hard not to laugh:

So what's the coincidence? Well, last year I wrote a science-fiction story called Destiny about the future of humanity, and one of the main plot themes is the first manned mission to Mars. The mission is funded and undertaken by a group of very rich individuals, and I cast Richard Branson as the leader of the 'Genesis project'! Here's an image of the Genesis meeting; if you look carefully you'll recognize the main speaker is Branson drawn from behind:

If you're interested in watching the movie, visit the Destiny web site or click below. The man in the picture below is the Genesis leader, this time showing Branson's face clearly.

Destiny

  • Destiny is my science fiction movie about the future of humanity. It's an epic, similar in breadth and scope to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
