I'm a huge fan of iPods, and in fact I'm listening to my iPod mini while I'm writing this post. Apple did a great job making it easy to use, apart from one feature which drives me nuts! The feature I'm talking about is the way that you turn the device off. Apparently you're meant to hold down the play/pause button for a few seconds in order to turn it off. Not only is this not intuitive at all, but it doesn't seem to work a great deal of the time. I typically have to hold down the button 4-5 times in order to hit the magic timing sequence and turn the iPod off. If I'm off base here, please let me know. It just seems very odd that such an obvious design flaw still remains.

I too have seen some design flaws in this. i have previously used the archos 100gig mp3 video player. found that it was too bulky and battery life went down way too fast when watching movies. so i moved over to the ipod. I found that after many freezes and such. that it wouldnt be reconized by my computer. after about 4 different attempts. i finally found the latelest version of firmware for the ipod itself and since then i have had no problems
Still you would think that apple would change the way they do things knowing that they have a incredible corner of the mp3 market

Posted by: gisele | Oct 04, 2006 at 07:09 PM
what worked for me was the reset holding down the select (center) and then the menu key for a few seconds I needed to get it back up cause i didnt have a backup and unplugged the device without it fully charging it then froze and I couldnt get anything from it. Thanx to this forum im up and running without needing to restore to original settings => YeeHaaa

wow, I thought I had broken my $300 Ipod video 30gb, I had a frozen screen and it wouldn't do anything, not even the lock sign would show up when you switch the hold button over, so I searched around and read {gisele's} comment and it worked, by simply holding the select (center) button and the menu button together. So by saying this I would like to shout out {gisele}, thank you VERY much

My ipod mini has been reset twice but is now as dead as a dodo. pc wont recognise it, reset procedures do not work, totally blank screen even under power....its dead 100% I think something went wrong during ttthe last reset, be careful when resetting,it can cause total failure of the unit...as i have found to my cost.

this guy right here has the right idea about frozen ipods.when your ipod just frezzes on a song and wont turn off and wont respnd at all.all you have to do is push the middle button and the menu button at the same time.omg the thing was frozen for about 2hrs before i could fix it,but thanx to this guys article im good

I had the same problem. The screen froze at the end of a song. I tried everything. Eventually, I sorted it out.
You have to hold down the select and menu buttons simultaneously but the problem is you have to do this very precisely and I mean VERY precisely. Lay your iPod completely flat and hold one finger directly down on the select button (button in the middle) and one directly down on the menu button on the top of the clickwheel. Even the slightest deviation will prevent your Ipod from responding.
It seems simple but it can be tricky even for those that have become accustomed to operating an Ipod. I tried this step several times and it only worked when I acted like a surgeon and was really meticulous about holding my fingers at a 90 degree angle when pushing on the buttons. Remember to lay your iPod down FLAT.

Try hooking up to itunes, eject the connection, and then reset the ipod by holding the menu and select button for 10 sec. It will turn off and sleep for you. It worked for me???

My ipod mini will not go back to the menu previous when I press the menu button. In order to get back to the starting screen on my ipod, I have to reset it. What should I do?

This site was more helpful than reading through the Apple docs!
I was about to throw out my ipod mini. The menu resetting advice helped... thank you, thank you!
