It's not surprising that a lot of things in nature have mathematical relationships, because it's a very compact way to encode structure.

EDU 2.0: Search Results

When I chose the name "EDU 2.0" for the name of my online education companies, I was placing a bet that the term "EDU 2.0" would become strongly associated with "next generation education". I still don't know if that will come to pass, but one bit of good news is if you search for "EDU20", "EDU 2.0" or "EDU2.0" on Google or Bing, my companies are the #1, #2, #3 and #4 hits each time:

EDU 2.0: New Web Design, Part 5

In part 4 of this series I showed the two choices for the left column of the site. Here's the final design we picked, which made the following changes:

- we decided on a white background for readability
- put a thin white line under the icon bar
- reduced the height of the blue section headings in the column
- reduced the height of the white tab options along the top
- improved the 'calendar' icon

So here is the final design for a "regular" page:

The next step is to finalize the layout of the EDU 2.0 home page (the school page design is already finished), and then it's on to HTML/CSS!

EDU 2.0: New Web Design, Part 4

In part of this series I showed the first mockup of a "regular" web page. We then made the following changes:

• made the borders on the buttons thinner and blue
• replaced the "account" icon shortcut with one for your calendar
• made the top navigation bar 1 pixel shorter
• replaced the second "advanced search" icon with a drop-down menu selection
• added a footer experimented with on-hover icons for editing shortcuts

The main remaining thing is to decide whether the left-hand column should have a white or colored background. On the one hand, having a white background makes the text clearer. On the other hand, the white areas detract from the main course content and perhaps they should be more subdued. Here's a mockup of both options.
